The Arts

Wellwood Art Department

Mrs. DeBlois & Ms. Kretschmer teach art to all 5th, 6th and 7th graders here at Wellwood! In 8th grade, students can choose whether or not they want to take art as an elective. Mrs. DeBlois and Ms. Kretschmer also teach both of the 8th grade art electives,  8th Grade Art (open to all students) and Studio Art (advanced, high school credit).

The middle school art curriculum plays a vital role in the development for a well rounded education. Art is an outlet for students to develop into critical thinkers, and increase their visual perception skills. Students have opportunities to work in a variety of media, techniques, and subject matter (landscape, portraiture, still life, color theory, art history, etc.), while building on the basic skills and prior knowledge developed in their earlier years.

Student work is often seen on display throughout Wellwood, filling display cases and the hallways. In addition, each month a piece is selected as "Masterpiece of the Month" and is framed and hung in the art room as a special honor. Students also have the chance to exhibit work within the community at venues like the district office, local libraries, and galleries, like Onondaga Community College and the Red House in downtown Syracuse.
