Role of the School Psychologist

A school psychologist is a professional with specialized training in psychology and education.  School psychologists understand child development, school systems and effective teaching and are prepared to help alleviate difficulties that may otherwise impede successful learning.

Most school psychologists provide the following services:

·         Evaluation: Conduct evaluations to determine eligibility for special services, determine social-emotional development, assess cognitive and academic functioning.

·         Consultation: Collaborate with educators and parents to formulate strategies to improve students’ success, formulate intervention plans for struggling students, assist in designing special education plans, help others understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior, collaborate with outside professionals.

·         Counseling: Provide individual and/or group counseling to help resolve issues that may interfere with school performance, design behavioral plans for students, serve as crucial member of crisis intervention teams.

·         Program evaluation and intervention: Systematically collect data to evaluate the effectiveness of academic and behavior management programs, use evidence-based research to understand students’ areas of strengths and challenges and develop effective interventions.

·         Legal, Ethical and Professional Practice: Practice in ways that are consistent with ethical, legal and professional standards and assist school personnel and parents in understanding regulations relevant to general and special education.
