Feb. 3, 2017: Fayetteville-Manlius High School students recently discovered serenity in an unlikely place: their school.

On Jan. 27, students in grades 9-12 participated in F-M High School’s second annual “Healthy F-M - Focus on Wellness Day” by participating in activities designed to ease stress, bust anxiety and promote mindfulness, which is the practice of paying more attention to the present moment.

“We want to help students find balance,” said F-M High School’s Director of Counseling Services and event committee member Heidi Green. “It’s important we provide them with time for fun and relaxation.”

The two-hour, school-wide event featured more than 40 workshops, including “adult” coloring, self-defense lessons, salsa dancing, community service projects, a ukulele strum-along, knitting, and do-it-yourself sessions where students could concoct chocolate-covered desserts, ice cream, granola bars, quesadillas, lip balm and aromatherapy products. Students could also use the cardiovascular and strength-training equipment available in the school’s fitness center, or participate in athletic events like pick-up flag football and basketball games.

Each student could attend up to three 40-minute workshops. They could choose whichever three sessions they wanted to attend, as long as when they arrived the activity was not at capacity, or “sold out.” Some activities were so popular that students vying for a seat in the session planned in advance their route to the classroom or workshop space.

Many F-M High School staff members facilitated hobbies they personally enjoy; staff members not working an activity helped monitor hallways and guide students to events.

“We hope through this event students recognize the importance of taking time for themselves and the value in having fun,” Mrs. Green said.

Following the third and final session, students were dismissed for the day so that staff members could attend a half-day professional development program.
