March 6, 2017: Two middle school students will test their geography expertise this month when they represent the Fayetteville-Manlius School District at the 2017 New York State National Geographic State Bee.

Eagle Hill Middle School eighth-grade student Luke Hasenwinkel and Wellwood Middle School seventh-grade student James Hoehner each qualified to participate in the state-level competition of the National Geographic Bee, which will be held March 31 at the New York State Museum in Albany.

In January, James and Luke placed first in their respective school’s Geography Bee competition and then each completed a written test to qualify for the state-level competition.

The National Geographic Society invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the State Bees. Each state’s champion will qualify to compete in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., May 14-17.

The National Geographic Bee, now in its 29th year, is an educational program of the National Geographic Society and is designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography.

Each state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, 4th Edition and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 14-17, 2017.

The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and all-expenses paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll.
