April 6, 2017: Three Fayetteville-Manlius School District students recently qualified to participate in a prestigious mathematics competition being held in Chicago this spring.

Wellwood Middle School sixth-graders Gene Balian, Jaehwan Kim and Lilah Poole are three of 576 students nationwide who are eligible to compete in MathCON, a national mathematics contest being held April 22 at the University of Illinois.

Hosted by Concept Schools of Chicago, MathCON is designed to engage students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum outside of the classroom, and to encourage more students to enter the STEM fields, according to a MathCON press release.

"MathCON is our way of engaging students in STEM and demonstrating its real-world applications," said Concept School's Math Education Director Ayhan Caputlu.

Thirty-six Wellwood students in grades five through eight elected to take MathCON's voluntary online exam in March. More than 49,000 students nationwide challenged the web-based test, which serves as the event's initial competition round and, based on test scores, determines the contest's national participants.

In Chicago, finalists will complete a 50-question math exam in 70 minutes and awards will be distributed to each grade level's top 10 scorers. The daylong event also includes various games, activities and chances for students to win various prizes.

Gene and Jaehwan have opted to attend the national competition.
