REMINDER: Next virtual mental health session is Thursday, May 16

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Fayetteville-Manlius School District parents, guardians, caregivers and teenage students (ages 13 and older) are invited to attend a virtual informational session focused on disordered eating.

Virtual mental health series begins Thursday, May 9

Three virtual workshops focusing on mental health awareness and wellness will be offered to Fayetteville-Manlius School District families beginning Thursday, May 9.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as part of the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance student wellness, 60-minute informational sessions will be offered on May 9, 16 and 23. Each session will be facilitated by mental health educator William DeSantis, who serves F-M as part of the district’s contract with Contact Community Services.

The first session will focus on suicide prevention and is intended for parents, guardians and caregivers. The last two sessions will focus on disordered eating and stress and is intended for parents, guardians, caregivers and teenage students (ages 13 and older).

Thursday, May 9

Topic: Talk Saves Lives – American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Programming
Audience: Parents, guardians, caregivers
Time: 6 to 7 p.m.

“Talk Saves Lives,” American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s standardized education program, provides participants with a clear understanding of this leading cause of death, including the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what they can do in their communities to save lives.

Thursday, May 16

Topic: Eating Disorders/Disordered Eating
Audience: Parents, guardians, caregivers and students (ages 13 and older)
Time: 6 to 7 p.m.

Melanie Bauder, Fayetteville-Manlius High School health teacher, and Ashley Dailey, family-school liaison, will share statistics, risk factors, identification and resources to support adolescents who may be struggling with disordered eating.

Thursday, May 23

Topic: Stress and Coping, How to Support Your Student
Audience: Parents, guardians, caregivers and students (ages 13 and older)
Time: 6 to 7 p.m.

Kristine Knutson, manager of community programs with Contact Community Services, will offer an examination of the signs and sources of stress coupled with strategies to manage and combat the impacts of stress in our youth.
