Batter up! Wellwood students learn history of women in baseball
When young students think about baseball, most likely names like Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez, Derek Jeter or even Babe Ruth might come to mind.
But what about the history of the sport? What about women in baseball?
Those are questions that Manlius resident Shelley McCann, self-proclaimed groupie of The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) recently answered during a presentation on Women in Baseball for students in Mary Frances Cosgrove and Meaghan McAnaney’s fifth-grade classes at Wellwood Middle School.
Mrs. McCann shared memorabilia and discussed the formation of AAGPBL. The league was in existence from 1941-1954.
“Students learned how the country pulled together during WWII,” said Miss Cosgrove. “and how it tried to keep the social fabric of the United States intact even with the many men going off to war.”
The fifth grade students at Wellwood study baseball each year and take a field trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. This presentation brought the women's exhibit to the students.
