NYS ELA exam

NYS ELA Exam 2014
All eighth graders will take the NYS Common Core ELA exam on April 1-3 .      .
This three day test (approx. 90 minutes per day) consists of:
Day One:    7 reading passages followed by 42 multiple choice questions.
Day Two: 3 reading passages followed by 26 multiple choice questions; reading
followed by short answer and an essay.
Day Three:  2 paired reading passages followed by 4 short answer questions and
               an essay.

The tests are scored regionally by teachers from F-M, Cazenovia, ESM, J-D and Canastota school districts. Scores from the separate parts of the test are compiled by New York State. Each student is given a final score from 1-4. A score of 3 or 4 is passing; a score of 1 or 2 is failing. While ELA scores are not used as report card or exam grades, a student's performance may be considered for ninth grade scheduling. Typically, students who do not pass this exam will be placed in writing lab in the high school.
