A national organization recently recognized the work and dedication of Fayetteville-Manlius School District Director of Physical Education and Athletics, Scott Sugar.
During its annual conference in March, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) awarded Sugar the organization’s 2023 State Award of Merit. This award is given to an athletic administrator as a reflection of the work they do to value, promote, preserve and support middle and high school athletics.
With a membership of more than 12,000 individuals, NIAAA is the professional organization for interscholastic athletic administrators. Its mission is to provide professional development options for directors of athletics and enhance the profession.
Sugar has worked as an athletic administrator for more than 20 years – including 11 years in his current position at F-M. He is the prestigious NIAAA award’s only recipient in New York state.
Prior to joining F-M in 2012, Sugar worked at Red Creek and Oswego City school districts. In addition to serving as athletic and physical education administrator, his career also includes teaching physical education and coaching varsity basketball and baseball.
Sugar is currently the Salt City Athletic Conference president, a National Federation of State High School Associations coaching certification instructor, a New York State Athletic Administrators Association (NYSAAA) chapter representative, a member of New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Championship Philosophy Committee, and an NIAAA conference presenter and leadership training faculty member.
He previously served as NYSAAA’s president, vice president, secretary and awards chairperson.
