A. SPILLS RESTRICTED TO CLASSROOM OR SHOP AREA:
- Determine the impact on students and the need to evacuate the area
- Call office to notify Building Principal(s), or program supervisors. Remove students to fresh air or safe area. Notify the Head Custodian to turn off air recirculation system and vent classroom to outside of building.
- Keep classroom doors closed to interior of building to prevent the spread of gases to interior of the building
- If spill is determined to be manageable, effect clean up and involve the Head Custodian as necessary for venting of classroom to outside of building.
When classroom has been deemed safe, classes may resume
B. SPILLS THAT CANNOT BE CONTAINED OR MANAGED WITHIN A CONFINED AREA:
- Staff Member is to evacuate students and other staff from the affected area to a safe area.
- Notify Building Principal(s), or Program Supervisors and the Head Custodian.
- Building Principal or person in charge evacuates surrounding classrooms/areas.
- If spill is in an open area, i.e. common area, hallway, determine ability to isolate and ventilate using fire doors and floor fans
- In the event of a full building evacuation, students and/or staff in wheelchairs would be evacuated and an announcement would be made to inform staff of an evacuation of the building and to provide staff and students with directions and areas to be avoided.
- Call 9-1-1 and apprise them of the situation. The fire alarm would then be pulled.
- Call Superintendent (315-692-1200) and Director of Facilities (315-692-1250).
- Call Health & Safety Office (315-692-1253 or 315-431-8591) to do testing/sampling as necessary and appropriate.
NOTE: As is stated in other sections of this manual, weather may be a factor in the ability to totally evacuate the building with regard to concerns for fragile students.
Evacuation by areas affected would be an initial response while evaluating the status of the event over time. Certain designated areas with the building have been identified as the safest place to house fragile students in the event of inclement weather conditions.
- If it is deemed that re-entry is not possible, notify component superintendents to pick up students and make attempts to call parents of young and severely disabled students. Radio/TV stations will be called by authorized personnel. The Transportation Department will be called as appropriate at the time of the building wide evacuation.
- Parents will be notified of the situation by the administration in writing in a letter home.
- The Post Emergency Reporting Form would be completed.
