Thirty-five Fayetteville-Manlius High School students recently traveled to Brown University to participate in a three-day Model United Nations (MUN) conference.
On Nov. 9-11, members of F-M High School’s Model United Nations club participated in the Brown University Simulation of the United Nations (BUSUN), which has been held annually at the historic campus for 22 years and draws more than 900 students and advisers from around the world.
During the conference, student-participants act as United Nations delegates. They discuss and debate various global issues, which this year included conflict in the Middle East, maternal mortality, and the submergence of island nations in the Pacific Ocean. Topics are chosen to challenge delegates to think critically about current events and engage thoughtfully with history, according to BUSUN.
Students are divided into small committees that focus on one of three categories: General Assemblies, Specialized Agencies, and Crisis Committees. Students are evaluated on their public speaking skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities and diplomacy.
The following F-M High School students were recognized at the conference for their performances:
- Honorable Delegates: Leila Abdul-Malak and Alexandru Mihaila, seniors
- Outstanding Delegates: Michelle Lim, Ryan Roos, and Jackson Wehrle, juniors, and Maria Costello, senior
- Best Delegates: Kathy Yang, junior and Alicia Perkovich, senior
F-M High School students who attended the conference are members of the Central New York Model United Nations Steering Committee. They plan to apply the knowledge they obtained at Brown during towards the upcoming MUN regional conference, which is set for Jan. 11-12 at Syracuse University.
