Beginning in July, the Transportation Department will be welcoming new leadership, as current Director of Transportation John Cunningham prepares to retire.
During its May 13 meeting, the Board of Education appointed Susan Stearns as the district’s next leader of the Transportation Department. Stearns comes to F-M with 25 years of experience, and has worked as a bus driver, dispatcher, and most recently the Transportation Supervisor at Marcellus Central School District.
“While I will miss John’s collaborative efforts to go the “extra mile” and his extensive history with the department, I know that Susan will be an excellent addition to the team,” said Superintendent of Schools Craig J. Tice. “She brings knowledge of safety standards and transportation procedures and a passion for student success that we know will help her thrive here at F-M.”
Stearns will replace John Cunningham, who will retire on June 30 after serving the district for 37 years. Cunningham was first hired at F-M as a mechanic in the Transportation Department. A project he looks fondly back on is building the wheelchair ramp at FMHS’ House 1.
“My favorite part of working at F-M has been working with and meeting a lot of great people along the way,” shared Cunningham.
He said he’s proud of the way his team can always handle whatever is thrown their way. Stearns will begin her new assignment beginning July 1.
