District offers support following difficult news

It is with profound sadness that we share with you that David Engel, a member of the Fayetteville-Manlius High School English and Theater Departments, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 24 as a result of a tragic vehicle accident. We extend our condolences to the Engel family and to all who knew Dave. This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school. Please know that counselors will be available to provide support for our students and families during this time.

The following are some words about Dave from a co-worker who knew him best:

Dave is successful at teaching all kids because, most importantly, he understands who they are: people deserving of respect and who want to know that they have been seen and cared for. He has a knack for understanding who kids are and what they need from him which creates a classroom community that encourages growth for every child. But he doesn’t stop there. Dave not only teaches regular English courses, but he also teaches our drama courses and is in charge of putting on the Fall play, running Improv Club and Thespians Club. He works tirelessly to ensure that every student who wants to try acting, has a shot at doing so. He turns no child away from pursuing their dream and gives them all a safe space to grow and challenge themselves without the fear of being criticized.

Our hearts and our doors are open to our staff, students, and families during this difficult time. We will be opening Fayetteville-Manlius High School and offering counseling support Sunday, Aug. 25, from 5-7 p.m.  Please join us through the House 1 Main Office Entrance.

At F-M, we have always prioritized our connections with our families and community as essential to our commitment to support one another. It is normal, and expected, that our students will need help in recognizing and processing their feelings in the coming days, weeks and months. Please talk with your child about how they are feeling. We have provided a number of resources below that may be useful in helping your child at home.

If you have questions or concerns, or would like to speak with a member of our counseling team, call us at (315) 692-1801. Although the school is not formally in session, our main office is open daily and we are available to communicate and partner with you through this difficult time.

We are heartbroken by this loss and are dedicated to supporting you and your children.

The Engel family asks that we please respect their privacy during this very difficult time.
