An Eagle Hill Middle School student is headed to the New York State qualifier for the National Civics Bee after placing in the local qualifier in March.
Anika Das participated in the regional Civics Bee in Rochester, taking home a second place win. The competition consisted of multiple choice quizzes and verbal arguments about civics topics of the students’ choice. To qualify, students first had to submit written essays on topics ranging from local infrastructure, civil rights, LGBTQ+ representation and more.
The National Civics Bee gives students in grade 6-8 the opportunity to explore issues that matter to their communities, and give them further understanding of civic engagement. The goal is to cultivate responsible citizenship.
Anika, along with two other students who placed in the regional competition, will now move onto the New York State qualifier for the National Civics Bee. The qualifier will take place in Albany on May 30, where students from around the state will compete to represent New York in the national competition. A $1,000 cash prize is also on the line.
Congratulations to Anika, and good luck in the state qualifier!
