The Fayetteville-Manlius School District is preparing to induct its Class of 2024 into its Athletic Hall of Fame, whose members exemplify the district’s commitment to academics, community and athletic excellence.
Dr. Phil Martin and Richard Roy will be inducted during a ceremony to be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024 at 12 p.m. in the Fayetteville-Manlius High School auditorium.
“The Class of 2024 includes two monumental contributors who combined forces during their time as administrators for the district to turn the hornet’s athletic department into one of the strongest and most successful athletics departments in New York State,” said F-M’s Director of Physical Education and Athletics Dr. Scott Sugar.
All current and former coaches, athletes, students, families, employees and community members are invited to attend the induction ceremony.
Class of 2025 Inductees
Dr. Phil Martin
Served as Superintendent of Schools for Fayetteville-Manlius from 1977 – 2005. Dr. Martin earned his doctoral degree from Syracuse University in 1974. In 1987-88, Dr. Martin was President of the New York State Council of School Superintends; as well as Co-Founder of the Central New York Education Consortium.
Dr. Martin is a 2005 Fayetteville-Manlius Hall of Distinction inductee and led the district through great expansion as the population within the district grew throughout his tenure. Dr. Martin and fellow inductee Rich Roy spearheaded the expansion of athletic fields and athletic opportunities throughout the district to support the expansion of population and interests of the students in the community.
Upon his retirement, Dr. Martin conducted education consulting for many districts across New York. Additionally, he was the co-owner and partner with Mr. Roy in the development of Schedule Galaxy, the premier scheduling platform used by athletic administrators across New York State.
Richard Roy
In 1990, Mr. Roy started his 22-year career as Director of Physical Education and Athletics for Fayetteville-Manlius. During his tenure, he added 30 athletic teams and 4 new sports for district students to participate in. He led the addition of 13 new athletic fields throughout the district to serve these additional teams. During his tenure, F-M teams won more than 250 league championships; 125 Section 3 championships; 13 New York State championships; and was recognized twice as a Top 10 best athletic program in the nation.
Additionally, Mr. Roy served as President of the Onondaga High School League from 1995-97; President of Section 3 from 2004-06. He was the 1997 Council of Administrators Director of the Year and the 2012 New York State Athletic Administrator of the Year Award winner.
Upon retirement, Mr. Roy partnered with Dr. Martin to create and develop Schedule Galaxy.
Hall of Fame Criteria
Hall of Fame inductees must meet one of the following criteria:
Athlete
Attended Fayetteville-Manlius School District and participated in interscholastic athletics; must have graduated 10 years ago by June of the current year.
Coach
Coached a Fayetteville-Manlius School District team or teams and has been retired for at least five years as of June of this year.
Team
Fayetteville-Manlius varsity athletic team whose accomplishments have raised the bar and left a legacy on high school athletics at Fayetteville-Manlius and Section III Athletics; team accomplishments must have been at least 10 years ago as of June of this year.
Other
Made significant contributions to the student-athletes and the interscholastic athletic department of Fayetteville-Manlius School District; contributions must have been at least five years ago as of June of this year.
