The Community Big Read is back, and F-M staff and community members are invited to come together in an effort to better support our students.
For F-M’s 3rd Big Read, participants will be asked to read “Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It.” The Big Read will kick off with an introductory event on Tuesday, October 29 in the FHMS auditorium. Two meetings will follow, where conversations will be guided and facilitated by F-M faculty members.
“We believe that when we come together like this, with the shared experience of reading this book, we have the potential to shift our culture and better support the wellness of our students and of all of us in this community,” explained FMHS Counselor Dana Pierce.
You don’t need to prepare or read anything prior to the kickoff event. The Big Read team plans to introduce the book and then split people into smaller groups for some guided questions. You’ll need to RSVP through this link if you plan to attend the introductory event.
This is a personal journey, and there is no pressure to participate following the kickoff event. If you read the book and would like to hear thoughts from other Big Read participants, there will be follow-up meetings on December 3rd and January 14th, where small, guided group conversations will take place.
“You can come and share, you can come and listen, or you can do both. It’s the coming together that matters, so please consider joining us,” added Pierce.
The kickoff event will be livestreamed for those who can’t attend in-person. When you RSVP, make sure to choose whether you’ll be in-person or virtual. There are also several copies of the book for community members to borrow. If you’d like to borrow a book, please email Dana Pierce at dpierce@fmschools.org.
